There are Champagnes that impress through power, and others that win you over through precision. Billecart-Salmon Le Réserve Extra Brut clearly belongs to the latter.
The nose is refined and immediately inviting, opening with crisp apple, ripe pear and lemon zest, followed by subtle notes of white flowers, brioche and lightly toasted almonds. With a little time in the glass, a delicate chalky minerality emerges, adding depth without ever overshadowing the fruit.
On the palate, the wine is remarkably composed. The mousse is exceptionally fine, acidity provides freshness and energy, while the low dosage allows the purity of the fruit and the quality of the blend to take centre stage. The finish is long, clean and gently saline, leaving the palate refreshed and ready for another sip.
This is not a Champagne that seeks attention through richness or concentration. Instead, it showcases the confidence of a house that knows exactly where elegance ends and excess begins.
My take
What struck me most was its effortless drinkability. We genuinely thought we would leave part of the bottle for another occasion. Instead, it quietly disappeared, sip after sip, without ever becoming tiring. To me, that’s one of the clearest signs of a truly great Champagne: a wine that doesn’t demand attention, but naturally earns it with every glass.
